Produce Safety Project Calls on FDA for Immediate Action

Attached please find a letter from the Produce Safety Project to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg calling for immediate action to eliminate food borne illness in the United States. As a reporter who covers the food industry and food safety issues, we thought we should share the letter with you. If you have any questions, or want to speak with Jim O’Hara, Director of the Produce Safety Project, please contact me at 301-651-4916. Susan Muma

Susan,

As I have said repeatably, Ultimately the current USDA/FDA inspection process must be revamped in order to prevent food borne illnesses in fresh produce.

It is my belief that educating the consumer through various media outlets is one way to provide awareness and the way to go. Most consumers have no idea just how outdated the current system is and how its designed to protect the industry and not the consumer. Its really appalling. I also think when consumers become educated on the facts, those responsible will listen.

Please remember, I was employed in the industry as an Executive VP, purchasing produce out of California and Mexico. I know how this works. If I can be of any further assistance, feel free to contact me at
